El Edema Macular Diabético (EMD) es una acumulación de líquido en la zona central de la retina que se puede producir como consecuencia de la retinopatía diabética.
El edema macular, se produce como resultado de un aumento de la permeabilidad vascular, que promueve la acumulación de fluidos (edema) y depósitos de proteínas en la región macular de la retina y un deterioro de la función visual.
Es la principal causa de pérdida de visión en los personas con diabetes. El paciente nota una pérdida de visión y en la mayoría de los casos percibe deformados los objetos (metamorfopsia).
