La caída del párpado superior (ptosis) se produce generalmente por una disfunción del músculo elevador, provocando que el párpado cubra el ojo más de lo habitual y dificulte la visión.
La principal causa es el envejecimiento aunque también puede ser debido a un problema congénito, o a una lesión o enfermedad. Además del debilitamiento del músculo los párpados caídos o ptosis se pueden originar porque el tendón del músculo se suelta de su anclaje. El ptosis o parpados caídos se puede corregir mediante cirugía.
